1. Macau Historic Centre UNESCO Overview
On July 15, 2005, at the 29th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Durban, South Africa, "The Historic Centre of Macau" (Centro Histórico de Macau / The Historic Centre of Macao) was officially inscribed on the World Heritage List, becoming China's 31st World Heritage Site. This is Macau's first and only World Heritage inscription to date.
The unique value of Macau's Historic Centre lies in: it is the earliest, largest, and best-preserved area of Sino-Western architectural fusion in China. Over more than four hundred years, Portuguese and Chinese people lived together in this area of just a few square kilometers, leaving behind a cityscape where temples and churches stand side by side, and Chinese residences intermingle with Southern European Baroque architecture—a rarity worldwide.
Heritage Composition Structure
Macau's Historic Centre covers two major areas: Area 1 extends from Mount Fortress to Penha Hill, and Area 2 is the area belonging to Guia Mountain. Overall, it contains 22 historic buildings and 8 squares/public spaces, totaling 30 numbered items (commonly referred to as "25 World Heritage sites," as some squares are counted together with adjacent buildings).
Classified by building type:
| Type | Quantity | Representative Buildings |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese Temples | 3 | A-Ma Temple, Na Tcha Temple, Sam Kai Vui Kun |
| Chinese Residences | 2 | Zheng Family Mansion, Lou Kau Mansion |
| Catholic Churches/Ruins | 6 | Ruins of St. Paul's, Cathedral, St. Dominic's Church, etc. |
| Military Facilities | 2 | Mount Fortress, Guia Fortress |
| Public Buildings | 9 | Leal Senado Building, Dom Pedro Theatre, Sir Robert Hotung's Library, etc. |
| Squares/Public Spaces | 8 | Senado Square, A-Ma Temple Square, Academia Square, etc. |
2. Route A: Senado Square → Ruins of St. Paul's (8 Heritage Sites)
Route A Walking distance: Approximately 1.2 km | Pure walking time: 20 minutes | Including visits: 2-3 hours
This is the most classic and most-visited World Heritage route, departing from Senado Square in downtown Macau, heading north along the souvenir street directly to the Ruins of St. Paul's. Along the way, you'll find the most representative churches, squares, and historic buildings, making it the "must-walk" route for Macau tourism.
① Leal Senado Building (Municipal Services Building)
Edifício do Instituto para os Assuntos Municipais (Leal Senado)
Address: Av. de Almeida Ribeiro No. 163 (163 Almeida Ribeiro Avenue)
Opening Hours: Gallery and Garden 09:00-21:00, open all year
Admission: Free
Built in 1784, the Leal Senado Building was formerly the Macau Municipal Chamber (Leal Senado, meaning "Loyal Senate"), the core of Portuguese municipal governance in Macau. The building adopts a Neoclassical style with a simple and dignified main façade. Inside, there is a library housing Portuguese books dating back to 1693. The garden features typical Portuguese cobblestone pavement and tropical flowers. The second-floor gallery regularly hosts exhibitions.
② Senado Square
Largo do Senado
Address: Largo do Senado (beside Almeida Ribeiro Avenue)
Opening Hours: Outdoor square, open 24 hours
Admission: Free
Senado Square is the most representative public space in Macau and the core landmark of the Historic Centre. The square's ground is paved with wavy Portuguese cobblestones (Calçada Portuguesa), with black-and-white wave patterns identical to those in Lisbon's Rossio Square, creating a strong Southern European atmosphere. The square is surrounded by pastel yellow and green Neoclassical buildings, with a fountain in the center that features large thematic decorations during Christmas and Lunar New Year. This is also a popular gathering point for both locals and tourists.
③ Sam Kai Vui Kun (Kuan Tai Temple)
Sam Kai Vui Kun (Templo de Kuan Tai)
Address: Rua Sul do Mercado de São Domingos (beside St. Dominic's Market)
Opening Hours: 09:00-18:00
Admission: Free
Built during the Qing Dynasty, Sam Kai Vui Kun was the meeting place for Macau's early Chinese merchant associations. "Three Streets" refers to Rua de João Pessoa, Rua das Virtudes, and Rua dabar, which were the core areas of Chinese commercial activity in Qing Dynasty Macau. The association enshrines Kuan Ti (Guan Yu), serving as both a merchants' gathering place and a worship site—this "temple-as-association" model was very common in Lingnan Chinese society. The building is not large but fully preserves the architectural form of Lingnan temples from the Qing Dynasty, making it an important physical example for understanding Macau's Chinese social organization.
④ Santa Casa da Misericordia Building
Santa Casa da Misericórdia
Address: Beside Largo do Senado
Opening Hours: Museum 10:00-13:00, 14:30-17:30 (Closed on Mondays)
Admission: Museum MOP 5
Founded in 1569 by Macau's first Catholic bishop, D. Belchior Carneiro, Santa Casa da Misericordia is one of the earliest charitable institutions in the Far East. It founded Macau's first Western-style hospital, orphanage, and nursing home, holding a milestone position in Macau's charitable history. The building's white Neoclassical façade faces Largo do Senado. The second floor houses a museum displaying founding documents, Catholic relics, and historical documents, including the oldest charitable institution charter still in existence in Asia.
⑤ Cathedral (Sé) and Cathedral Square
Sé Catedral / Largo da Sé
Address: Largo da Sé No. 1
Opening Hours: 09:30-18:00
Admission: Free
Macau's Cathedral was built around 1622, underwent multiple renovations, and its current appearance was finalized in 1937. The church exterior is simple and dignified, with the main façade made of granite with two symmetrical bell towers on top. Inside, stained glass windows depict Bible stories, and the altar is solemn and dignified. Cathedral Square is a small plaza paved with Portuguese cobblestones, with a stone fountain in the center. The atmosphere is quiet and peaceful, contrasting with the bustling Senado Square nearby.
