Alishan is not only Taiwan's most famous mountain scenic area, but also an excellent destination for travelers seeking unique souvenirs. With an altitude exceeding 2,000 meters and large temperature differences between day and night, the area has fostered high-quality high-mountain tea and Alishan coffee, combined with the Tsou indigenous cultural craftsmanship, creating a unique shopping experience. Although there are no large department stores, the souvenir shops and specialty stores distributed around and along the roads leading to Alishan National Forest Recreation Area will still allow you to return with full hands.
When shopping at Alishan, the biggest feature is "direct purchasing from the source"—whether it's high-mountain tea, coffee, or handmade mochi, you can buy the freshest products directly at the source. In recent years, with the increase in independent travelers, these stores have also placed greater emphasis on packaging quality and product diversity, such as limited-edition sakura season flavors, creative products combining indigenous patterns, making souvenir selections even more abundant.
Alishan Tayouni Specialty Store
Located opposite the Alishan Visitor Center, this store has an excellent location and is the first stop for most visitors either before or after their mountain hike. The store has a quite comprehensive range of products, covering Alishan high-mountain tea, Oolong tea bags, Alishan coffee beans, and indigenous handcrafted items. In terms of prices, Alishan high-mountain tea ranges from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars depending on grade, while coffee beans are approximately NT$250 to NT$500. Since the store sources directly from the production area, quality is guaranteed to some extent. The staff are very familiar with tea varieties and brewing methods, able to provide professional purchase advice—ideal for first-time visitors to Alishan.
Wanque Xiang Souvenir Store
Located near the Tianchangjiujiu Bridge, Wanque Xiang is a must-visit Alishan souvenir store for many foodies. Signature products include nougat cookies and coconut balls, with a sweet but not cloying taste that is very popular among young people. A box of nougat cookies is approximately NT$200 to NT$300, while coconut balls start from NT$150 depending on package size. The biggest advantage here is that the products have a relatively long shelf life, suitable for giving as gifts to friends and family. The store also offers tasting services, so visitors can try before buying to ensure it matches their taste preferences.
Longmei Meat Buns
This store has been passed down to the third generation and is a quite well-known old-fashioned shop in the Alishan area. Signature products include steamed buns and meat buns of various flavors, with generous fillings and affordable prices—meat buns are approximately NT$25 to NT$35 each. Since business is very good, they usually sell out quickly once they come out of the steamer, so it's recommended to visit in the morning to avoid disappointment. Many locals say that the key to Longmei Meat Buns' lasting popularity is their solid handmade craftsmanship and quality ingredients. Paired with Alishan high-mountain tea, it makes a perfect mountain afternoon tea.
Sunrise Shop
If you're looking for items with commemorative value, Sunrise Shop is another good choice. They feature limited-edition "Sakura Sunrise Cookies" and other special commemorative cookies for the sakura season. The packaging design also incorporates the classic imagery of Alishan sunrise, making it perfect as a souvenir for friends. Prices are approximately NT$150 to NT$350, depending on product type. The store also sells some Alishan scenic postcards and hand-drawn maps—a must-visit for souvenir collectors.
Ajiang's House Café
Though not a traditional souvenir store, this is definitely worth a visit for visitors who love Alishan coffee. The store offers freshly brewed Alishan high-mountain coffee, priced at approximately NT$120 to NT$180 per cup, and you can also participate in coffee DIY experience activities (approximately NT$300 to NT$500). Note that there is a minimum spend requirement, cash only, and a 1.5-hour time limit for staying, so it's recommended to plan your itinerary in advance.
Practical Information
Regarding transportation, visitors can take the Taiwan Tourist Bus from Chiayi High-Speed Rail Station or Chiayi Railway Station to Alishan. Line A departs from Chiayi High-Speed Rail Station, while Line B departs from Chiayi Railway Station, with a one-way ticket price of approximately NT$550 and a travel time of about 2.5 to 3 hours. Self-driving visitors can park their vehicles at the Alishan Forest Recreation Area parking lot.
The Alishan National Forest Recreation Area is open 24 hours. The small train's winter operating hours (October to March) are 08:00 to 17:00, while summer (April to September) extends to 18:00. Park tickets are subject to official announcement—it's recommended to check the latest information before your trip.
Travel Tips
For Alishan shopping, it's recommended to arrange on the second morning of your itinerary or when descending the mountain, as most souvenir stores have the most complete inventory in the morning—especially for popular items like Longmei Meat Buns that require queuing, buying early ensures you get them. During the sakura season (usually March to April), there are particularly many people, so it's recommended to avoid weekend peak crowds.
