When it comes to Alishan festivals, most people first think of the romantic cherry blossoms in spring, but actually Alishan in autumn and winter is even more spectacular. When mist rolls through valleys and maple leaves transform from green to crimson, the Tsou tribe's festival drums echo through the mountains - this is Alishan's most intimate side. Winter at Alishan (November to February) brings frequent sea of clouds with excellent visibility, making it the best season to watch sunrise and sea of clouds. The maple season begins in late November, with Yoshino cherry leaves turning red first, followed by Muzha cherries and Taiwan's endemic beech, painting the entire mountain in warm hues of varying depths. Visiting Alishan during this season means fewer crowds than spring, and accommodation prices are more approachable, making it ideal for travelers seeking a deeper experience.
Alishan Township is the main settlement of the Tsou people. Every November during the harvest season, the tribe holds a millet harvest festival (also known as Harvest Festival), offering a rare opportunity to understand Tsou culture. The rituals are usually held in Dabang or Lijia villages, where visitors can watch traditional drum ceremonies, song and dance performances, and traditional skill demonstrations. Compared to commercialized performances, these festivals retain strong ethnic spirit, with a solemn yet lively atmosphere. However, it's important to note that tribal rituals have their own traditional customs - it's recommended to contact local guides in advance and observe photography and viewing etiquette.
Speaking of Alishan's winter wonders, Zhushan Observation Platform is a must-visit sunrise spot. It's about a 10-minute walk from Zhushan Station to the observation platform, and when morning light pierces through the sea of clouds, spontaneous gasps erupt from the crowd. The sea of clouds here feels completely different from Taroko or Sun Moon Lake - Alishan's sea of clouds has layers, rolling like waves through the valleys. On clear days, you can even see the snowy ridgelines of the Yushan Mountain Range. It's recommended to arrive at Zhushan Station before 5 AM, and taking the small train is the most convenient way, with a one-way ticket at NT$150 per person.
Shizhuo Trail System is a rising new attraction in recent years, about a 30-minute drive from Alishan Forest Recreation Area. There are several trails of varying difficulty, with "Shizhuo Trail" and "霞之道" (Mist Trail) most suitable for general visitors. During autumn and winter, the maple trees and spruce along the trail create a breathtaking landscape canvas, and the crowd is much smaller than Alishan Forest Recreation Area, making it easier to take photos. There are also several scenic tea houses near Shizhuo, offering high mountain oolong tea tasting experiences, with a cup of good tea starting at NT$80 - a perfect place to rest when tired.
If you want to experience the complete Tsou culture, Alishan Cha Shan Village is a must-visit. Cha Shan is located at the end of Alishan Highway, a relatively remote village that has preserved complete traditional culture. Here you can sign up for village guided tours, including traditional weaving, archery experience, and local flavor cuisine, costing approximately NT$800-1200 per person (including guide and meals). The "Gabala" in the village is a traditional pavilion and a great place to experience local life. Many travelers choose to stay overnight here, enjoying peaceful seclusion away from the world.
Finally, a secret spot recommendation - Rui Li Scenic Area's Wisteria Season (around March to April annually). Although it's in spring, wisteria's purple waterfall effect is完全不輸櫻花 (完全不輸櫻花 = no less spectacular than cherry blossoms), yet fewer people know about it. Rui Li is about a 1-hour drive from Alishan, and the bamboo forest and tea garden scenery along the way is equally attractive. There are diverse民宿 (民宿 = B&B) options here, with double rooms available at NT$1500-2500 during off-season, offering great value.
