Macao Transportation Layout: Travel Logic Across Four Districts
Macao consists of four main geographic areas: Macao Peninsula, Taipa, Cotai, and Coloane, connected by bridges and tunnels. Understanding the geographic relationships of these four districts is the foundation of travel planning: Macao Peninsula is the city core, connected to Taipa via Governor Nobre de Carvalho Bridge and Friendship Bridge; southern Taipa was formed through land reclamation to create Cotai; Coloane is the southernmost original island, now connected to Cotai.
Macao Light Rail (Macau LRT): East Line Now Operational
Existing Routes
Macao Light Rail East Line (Taipa Line) opened at the end of 2019, departing from Taipa Passenger Terminal, passing through Macau International Airport and East Asian Games Sports Stadium, to Seac Pai Wan, primarily serving Taipa and Cotai travelers. Since 2023, it extended to Barra Station (southern Peninsula), forming the "Barra ↔ Taipa Terminal" section, with fares at MOP6 (one-way, adult).
Key Stations
- Barra Station: Southern Peninsula, close to Portuguese historic architecture, within walking distance to Avenida de Horta da Costa and Rua do Campo
- Macau Peninsula Station (Under Construction): Planned extension to Border Gate by 2026,届时覆蓋全半島
- Airport Station: Direct access to Macau International Airport
- Taipa Passenger Terminal Station: Arrival point for Hong Kong-Macao jetfoils
- City of Dreams Station: Services Studio City, Galaxy, Four Seasons Hotel and more
Light Rail Notes
The light rail currently covers mainly the Taipa to Cotai section, with limited Peninsula coverage. To reach Rua do Campo, Senate Square and other Peninsula core areas, bus or walking is still required. Tourist light rail passes (24/48-hour unlimited rides) are recommended, especially cost-effective for Cotai travelers.
Public Bus: The Most Extensive Transportation Option
Fares and Payments
Macao public buses (Transmac/TCM) have unified fares: MOP6 between Macao Peninsula and Taipa/Cotai areas, MOP8.5 when crossing Governor Nobre de Carvalho Bridge (cash). Macau Pass can be used for rides, with transfer discounts of MOP3 within 45 minutes. Getting a Macau Pass card is recommended for convenience and transfer discounts.

Note: Macao has limited taxi numbers, extremely difficult to flag during peak seasons (Lunar New Year/large events). Using the "Macao Taxi Service" App for booking or asking hotel concierge to call a taxi is recommended. Taxis do not allow carpooling, so splitting rides is not recommended.
Hotel Free Shuttle: Essential for Cotai Travelers
Major Cotai resorts offer free shuttle bus services, running between Outer Harbour Terminal (Macau Peninsula), Taipa Passenger Terminal, Macau International Airport and the resorts. Departures approximately every 15-30 minutes, operating all day (usually 06:00-23:00).
