Coloane: The Only Place in Macao Where You Can Forget the Casinos Exist
Coloane holds a special place in Macao - it's the only spot in this city where you're not surrounded by neon lights and casino advertisements. Dizhi Tang Mountain, Black Sand Beach, and winding coastlines feel especially precious in a tiny place like Macao. At 7 AM on Saturday mornings at the foot of Coloane Mountain, you won't see tourists - you'll see locals in running shoes, families with dogs, and elderly neighbors strolling with thermoses. The hiking trails in Coloane have been developed by the Macao Municipal Services Bureau since 1984, and now there are 8 walking trails on Coloane Island, with elevation drops ranging from nearly zero to nearly 170 meters. The difficulty range is wide enough that whether you're hiking for the first time or are a weekly regular, you can find a suitable route.
Four Main Trail Details
Coloane Walking Trail (Full Route 8.1 km)
This was the first formal forest trail developed on Macao's islands, built in 1984, with a total length of 8,100 meters circling Dizhi Tang Mountain, staying at around 100 meters altitude along the mid-mountain slope. The trail passes through both forest and coastal terrain, and the most spectacular section offers viewpoints where you can see both Black Sand Beach and the southern coast of Coloane Island simultaneously - with ocean views on both sides flanking a narrow path, a vista you won't find anywhere else in Macao. The full hike takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. Most of the surface is paved, but some sections have stone steps and slopes, so sports shoes rather than slippers are recommended. The starting point is at Coloane town's high road, and the end point connects back to town - convenient transport. Public buses 21A, 25, 26, and 26A all go to Coloane town.
Black Sand Reservoir Health Trail (Full Length approximately 1.5 km)
Opened in 1998, this trail was designed with a clear goal: to allow those with lower fitness, families with young children, or elderly members to also enjoy Coloane's natural environment. The entire route has flat surfaces with almost no significant起伏, with 9 fitness stations along the shaded sections around Black Sand Reservoir. The reservoir itself was built in 1992, surrounded by abundant wetland plants, with migratory birds stopping during autumn and winter. The entry and exit are near the plant maze, and completing the loop takes about 30 to 40 minutes. If you're bringing children under 6 or elderly members, this is the most practical choice - not because the scenery is the best, but because there are escape routes throughout, and you can turn back anytime. Bus 21A to Black Sand Beach stop, then about 10 minutes walk to the entrance.
Black Sand Dragon's Paw Point Coastal Trail (Full Length 2.15 km)
The star of this trail isn't the mountain, but the coastal geology. The Dragon's Paw Point area has many golden and brown-shaped reef rocks, formed from long-term wave erosion on granite. Some reef rocks do look like claws, making the name well-deserved. The full trail is 2,150 meters long, running along the forest edge at about 40 meters altitude. At low tide, you can discover horseshoe crabs, sea urchins, sea anemones, and other creatures among the rocks - if you're with children, this "creature hunting" activity is more interesting than any zoo because it's a real environment. Some rock sections are closed during high tide, so check the day's tide times before setting out. Difficulty is beginner to intermediate, taking about 1.5 hours round trip.
Stone Basin Ancient Path (Quick Route 35 minutes / Extended 3-4 hours)
There are two ways to enjoy the Stone Basin Ancient Path. The quick version runs from the Stone Basin entrance to the mountain's high point, taking about 35 minutes one way, suitable for those who want to see the full outline of Coloane Island but have limited time. The extended version continues from the summit to the Mazu Cultural Village or Stone排 Bay Country Park, extending the hike to 3-4 hours, with opportunities to visit St. Francis Xavier Church in Coloane (the colorful church) and Mazu Temple along the way. The latter section at Stone排 Bay Country Park has the Macao Giant Panda Pavilion. If you're with children, this extended route can accomplish both hiking and parent-child visits. The Stone Basin entrance is on Stone Basin Road, accessible by bus 25.

Hiking Gear and Practical Tips
Gear List (Coloane Standard)
The trails in Coloane don't have high elevations, but some basic gear is essential: sports shoes or hiking shoes (not slippers, some sections have stone steps), at least 500ml of water (water refill points along Dragon's Paw Point and the Walking Trail are limited), sun protection (coastal sections have no shade), light jacket (mountain tops are windy). If bringing children, add insect repellent - forest sections have plenty of mosquitoes, especially after dusk.
Timing Choices
The most recommended starting time is 7 to 9 AM, for three reasons: First, temperature - Coloane has no tall buildings for shade, and after 10 AM direct sunlight is very体力-consuming. Second, crowds - fewer tourists in the morning, uncrowded paths. Third, lighting - morning light on Black Sand Beach and coastal rocks has the best angles. Summer (June to September) is not recommended for hiking around midday, and rainy season requires attention to slippery mountain paths. Autumn and winter (October to March) is the golden season for hiking in Coloane, with cool weather and high visibility.
Leave No Trace Principles
Coloane's ecological environment is a rare natural asset preserved in Macao. Take your trash with you, don't pick flowers or plants, keep distance from wild animals - these three points are mentioned in the Macao Nature Network's official guidelines, and are also basic consensus among Coloane's local hiking community. The reef creatures at Dragon's Paw Point are especially fragile - don't move rocks and leave them out of place, or you'll directly kill the creatures attached to them.
