Nagoya is not only the hometown of Toyota automobiles but also an ideal city that connects modern industry and ancient culture through cycling. Compared to the urban jungle cycling of Tokyo or the ancient capital wandering of Kyoto, Nagoya offers a unique "industrial-cultural fusion" cycling experience — you can ride through modern automotive factory parks and then turn into Atsuta Shrine with 1,900 years of history, all in one day.
Three Major Features of Nagoya Cycling
Industrial Heritage Landscape Route
From the Nagoya Port area to the Nakamura Ward area, the historical traces of Japan's post-war industrial revival are completely preserved. Cycling here, you'll discover industrial aesthetics that many European and American travelers have never explored — from 1960s shipyard converted creative parks to modern automotive exhibition centers, this route showcases the evolution history of Japanese manufacturing industry.
River Greenway System
Three major rivers — Shonai River, Shintani River, and Yamasaki River — form a natural cycling network in Nagoya city. Compared to other major Japanese cities, Nagoya's river cycling path planning places more emphasis on practicality — there are rest stops every 2-3 kilometers, and most sections are completely separated from car lanes.
Cultural Heritage Connection
From Atsuta Shrine to Nagoya Castle and Tokugawa Garden, the distances between these important cultural landmarks are all within 5-8 km, perfect for leisurely cycling. More importantly, you'll pass through multiple traditional shopping districts along the way, allowing you to deeply experience the daily life of Nagoya residents.
Five Selected Cycling Routes
Nagoya Port Industrial Heritage Line
Around Minatomachi, Minato Ward, Nagoya City, Postal Code 455-0033
This 12 km route starts from Meitetsu Nagoya Port Station and runs along the industrial heritage buildings in the port area. Highlights include Nagoya Port Aquarium (1 hour recommended for visit), JETTY Observation Deck, and multiple old factories converted into art spaces. The route is flat and offers wide-open views, suitable for photography enthusiasts. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom along the shore, creating a striking contrast between industry and nature.
Atsuta Shrine Historical Axis
Around Atsuta Shrine, Atsuta Ward to Chuo Ward, Nagoya City, Postal Code 456-0018
Starting from Atsuta Shrine, passing through White Bird Garden, Nagoya International Conference Center, and finally arriving at Nagoya Castle. The full route is 8 km, taking about 45 minutes of cycling (excluding visiting time). The essence of this route lies in experiencing Nagoya's 1,400-year historical depth — from the ancient Shinto faith center to the political stronghold of Tokugawa Ieyasu. After visiting Atsuta Shrine, we recommend purchasing local specialty snacks related to "Nagoya Cochin".
Shonai Riverbank Greenway
Around Sakaicho, Kita Ward, Nagoya City, Postal Code 462-0844
The cycling path along the right bank of Shonai River is one of Nagoya citizens' favorite exercise routes. Along the 15 km route, you'll pass through multiple riverside parks and bird watching spots. Early morning cycling from 6-8 AM is especially recommended, when the river surface is shrouded in mist and water birds like egrets are often spotted. There are 24-hour public toilets and vending machines along the way.
Osu Shopping District Slow Cycling Exploration
Around Osu, Chuo Ward, Nagoya City, Postal Code 460-0011
Cycling through the old district starting from Osu Kannon Temple is the best way to experience Nagoya's folk culture. The special feature here is that you can ride through the ancient shopping streets (note: before 10 AM and after 6 PM are more suitable to avoid crowds). Recommended routes include Osu Shopping Street, Manshoji Temple, and Wakamiya Hachiman Shrine. There are several long-established wagashi (Japanese confectionery) shops along the way; we recommend trying the local specialty "Uiroro".
Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Garden Natural Loop
Around Higashiyamamotocho, Chikusa Ward, Nagoya City, Postal Code 464-0804
This route combines urban green lungs and cultural facilities. Starting from Higashiyama Park Station on the subway, you can ride to the Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Garden, Higashiyama Sky Tower, and extend to Heiwa Park. The full route is about 10 km with significant elevation changes, suitable for cyclists with a certain level of fitness. In autumn, the maple leaf scenery along the route is particularly spectacular, making it a secret route for maple viewing within Nagoya city.
Practical Cycling Information
Rental Points and Fees
The main bicycle rental locations in Nagoya city are distributed at JR Nagoya Station, Sakana Subway Station, Kanayama Station, and other transportation hubs. Generally, electric bicycle rental is ¥800-1,200/day, and regular bicycles are ¥500-800/day. We recommend using the "Docomo Bike Share" shared bicycle system, ¥165 within 30 minutes, available for borrowing and returning at more than 150 locations across the city.
Best Cycling Time
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most suitable cycling seasons, with mild climate and less rainfall. In summer, you need to pay attention to heat prevention, and we recommend choosing early morning or evening hours. Although winter is colder, Nagoya has little snow, so short-distance cycling is still possible.
Transportation Connections
Both Nagoya's subway and JR systems allow carrying folding bicycles (must be in a bag), making it convenient to cycle after long-distance travel. From Chubu International Airport to the city center, you can take the μ-SKY express to Kanayama Station (28 minutes, ¥360), then transfer to the subway to each cycling starting point.
Cycling Tips
Nagoya's driving culture is relatively conservative, and car drivers tend to be more courteous to bicycles, but you still need to pay attention to traffic rules. Cycling in Japan follows left-side traffic, and lights must be turned on when cycling at night. When cycling around shopping streets or shrines, we recommend getting off and pushing your bike in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic to show respect for the local culture.
Prepare a small backpack for rain gear, as afternoon showers are relatively common in Nagoya. Most convenience stores have free bicycle parking spaces, which you can make use of when shopping or resting. Remember to download the "Yahoo! Weather" mobile APP to keep track of weather changes at any time.
