In Kaohsiung, eating seafood ain't no rare thing——this here's a port city, we can eat the freshest catch of the day every single day.

Unlike Taipei where they make a fuss about fancy seafood, Kaohsiung's seafood has a plus——it's a port city itself. Apart from the small fishing boats that work the near coastal waters, the real draw is having the "deep-sea port" as its backbone. The large purse seine boats and longline fishing vessels from Qianzhen Port come into harbour every evening through to early morning, and that's when the wholesale market hits its peak.

Kaohsiung Seafood's Highlight Reel

First plus: it's "fresh catch" (alive and wriggling), don't go comparing it to those imported goods from the outlying islands that are stuffed with ice and preservatives.

Second plus: Kaohsiung's beach areas are varied——from Qieding in the north to Luzhu in the south, each place has its own specialty——so you won't be eating the same thing twice.

Third plus: Kaohsiung folks don't eat seafood to show off or make a grand impression——it's part of everyday life——the harbour markets and food stalls are everywhere, so ordinary folks can enjoy it too.

Recommended Spots

1. Ganyan Waterfront Road Old-School Seafood

Old Yancheng harbour's one old street, no fancy five-star decorations, but all the regulars are local loyalists. You can watch them standing at the seafood shop doorway picking their catch——the chef's in the back, still got thirty-odd years of experience under his belt, give him a shout and he'll tell you——when you eat here, it's not about being the best in the country, it's about tasting the "harbour flavour."

On Qixian 3rd Road, Yancheng District,

NT$120~350 per person

2. Qihou Harbour Seafood Shop

This is the "fresh catch" holy grail——when the boats come into harbour, the catch goes straight to the shop floor, no more ice or storage. Especially from dusk till dawn, the truly fresh, just-caught seafood from the harbour is exclusive to this place. Plus the boss's cooking methods are old-school classics——salt-grilled, braised in soy sauce, ginger and spring onion——thirty years unchanged. Walk past Qihou Street's stone walls and you can smell the sea. At No. 62 Qihou Street, Qijin District,

NT$150~400 per person

3. Qianzhen Port Wholesale Market

Not here to drum up tourists——this is the beating heart of Kaohsiung seafood. If you want to understand the seafood market, come here——at four or five in the morning, the fish market starts its auction, big and small, everyone shouting out prices. Though regular folks can't bid directly, you can watch the masters at work and feel the power of harbour-fresh produce. If you want to learn a thing or two, it's worth getting up early to experience the real "port life." On Xinsheng Road, Qianzhen District,

Open to visitors,

AM4:00~8:00

4. Xingda Harbour Seaside Cooking

Kaohsiung's southern hidden gem——a coastal road that not many know about, with a tucked-away seafood eatery beside it. The boss started working at the harbour thirty years ago and still cooks the "fresh catch" the old-fashioned way. Recommended: the "signature XL" seafood steamed rice——using the harbour's old-school fragrant rice and the freshest catch, not some marketing stunt, but word of mouth among casual diners. If you want to experience the "hidden harbour flavour" that hardly anyone knows about, look no further. In Luzhu District,

NT$100~250 per person

5. Ruifeng Night Market Harbour Flavours (Little Hong Kong)

If you're grabbing a bite in Kaohsiung, Ruifeng Night Market's seafood snacks are a top pick——in the market's back alleys, there are a few stalls grilling up fresh catch, portions at NT$60-120, and for a hundred or so quid you can enjoy the sea's freshness. The more special offerings include grilled snail and grilled clam, done their own way, with the seafood's natural sweetness. Ruifeng Night Market is the heart of Kaohsiung's nightlife. NT$60-150 per person
