Coloane is the most tranquil of Macau four islands. Without the neon lights of casinos and the crowds of large shopping centers, what has been preserved here is a rhythm of life that has been gradually washed away by the currents of time — the morning auction cries at the pier, cats dozing at three in the afternoon, and those old dessert shops that insist on handcrafting.

For me, tasting Coloane desserts is a taste journey back to the past. These shop owners dont chase internet celebrity check-ins or care about fancy plating. What they preserve are the recipes and techniques passed down from the previous generation. Every visit offers not just sweets, but a fading piece of Macau culinary memory.

【Three Distinctive Features of Coloane Desserts】

Before discussing Taipa desserts, its important to clarify one concept: Coloane desserts and Cotai desserts are two completely different worlds. The latter are star restaurant desserts under integrated resort brands, while the former are family-style handcrafts from street corners. This difference is reflected not only in price, but also in the philosophy toward desserts — the former pursues visual perfection, while the latter pursues honest, unpretentious flavor.

The first distinctive feature of Coloane desserts is seasonality. Local master bakers told me that in the past, Coloane housewives would make different pastries according to the solar terms: mugwort cakes for Qingming Festival, alkaline rice dumplings for Dragon Boat Festival, and mooncakes for Mid-Autumn Festival. Not many shops still insist on this tradition today, but by visiting these three old shops, you can still taste flavors with seasonal印记.

The second feature is slowness. Theres no QR code ordering, no central kitchen delivery — every pastry is made on-site and doesnt come out of the oven until customers arrive. You can watch the baker repeatedly fold the dough, let the filling slowly seep into the crust, let the egg tarts gradually color in the oven — in this era that pursues speed, this kind of slowness has become the most precious quality.

The third feature is human warmth. All three shops are family-run, now in their second or third generation. There are no waiters in the shop, only family-style greetings — “Buying so much today?” “Was the red bean cake you brought last time better?” Youll feel like your not consuming from a shop, but being invited into a family to share their craftsmanship.

【Three Old Shops Recommendations】

Lord Stow's Bakery

If I can only recommend one Coloane dessert shop, it must be Lord Stow's. This old shop founded in 1989 is considered one of the origins of Macau Portuguese egg tarts, and is a must-visit for global tourists coming to Coloane.

But what I want to say is: Dont just look at the famous egg tarts. Lord Stow's real killer feature is their baked cake series — traditional fillings wrapped in golden crusts, red beans, mung beans, peanuts, sesame — each one is a taste from childhood memories. A large baked cake is usually MOP$12-18, offering excellent value.

What I appreciate most about them is their insistence on hand-laminated pastry. The dough needs to be folded multiple times, with each fold requiring precise pressure and angle,,这样才能做出层层分明又酥脆掉渣的饼皮. This process is time-consuming and labor-intensive, many shops have long switched to machine production, but Lord Stow's still retains old masters who do hand lamination.

Address: 7, Travessa do Matadouro, Coloane. Opening hours are 7am to 6pm, open all year round. Its recommended to arrive before 10am, when the variety of freshly baked items is most complete; often popular varieties are sold out by afternoon.

Golden Swallow Western Butter Cake

This even more hidden shop is located on the stone road toward Hac Sa Beach; its easy to miss if your not specifically looking for it. But for those who truly love desserts, this shop is a treasure-level existence.

Golden Swallow specializes in “dang kuih” — a traditional snack only available in Coloane. Made from glutinous rice flour, these small round balls are filled with crushed peanuts and sugar powder, wrapped finely in shredded coconut. At first bite, comes the aroma of coconut, then the chewy glutinous rice, finally the sweet filling — distinct layers.

I especially recommend their ginger milk punch flavored dang kuih. With ginger milk as the filling, there's a slight spicy sensation that wont overwhelm, perfectly balancing the sweetness. This flavor is unique to Golden Swallow; you wont find alternatives elsewhere.

Prices are very friendly; a bag of six dang kuih costs only MOP$15. Its recommended to pair with a cup of herbal tea sold by the auntie at Coloane Market, which helps cut through the richness.

Address: Stone Road near motorcycles in Coloane. No fixed opening hours; usually opens after 2pm, closes when sold out. Better to be lucky than early — its recommended to call ahead to confirm whether they will be open that day.

French Daughter Bakery

The name sounds quite Western, but actually its a traditional bakery with forty years of history, founded by a Portuguese Macanese lady and now run by her daughter.

Their signature item is cheese shrimp meat pie — a savory puff pastry filled with shrimp and cheese. When baked, the cheese slightly puffs up, forming beautiful golden wavy patterns, quite tempting. Only MOP$8 each, amazing value.

But what I want to recommend more is their osmanthus cake — a steamed cake wrapped in osmanthus leaves, with brown sugar and peanuts as filling. The fragrance of osmanthus slowly permeates into the cake during steaming, leaving a subtle herb aftertaste and returning sweetness — never seen this method anywhere else.

French Daughter Bakery is easier to locate, right across from Coloane Municipal Market. Opening hours are 8am to 3pm, closed on Sundays. Its recommended to avoid weekend morning peak hours; weekday mornings allow quiet conversation with staff, learning about each pastries methods and stories.

【Practical Information】

Transportation: The most convenient way from the Macau Peninsula to Coloane is by bus. Route 15 (round-trip between Barra and Coloane) and Route 21A (between Portas do Sol and Hac Sa Beach) both reach Coloane town center, taking about 30-40 minutes. You can also consider renting a scooter for self-driving; Coloane is not large, and cycling around the island takes about an hour.

Budget: If you want to thoroughly sample all three shops, its recommended to prepare a budget of MOP$50-80. This amount in Coloane can buy quite generous desserts, enough to cover your afternoon tea and post-dinner sweets. According to early 2026 inflation levels, this budget has increased about 3-5% from last year, mainly due to rising ingredient costs — especially butter and flour, more affected by global supply chains.

Best timing: I most recommend visiting Coloane between 3pm and 5pm. The afternoon sun is Just right, temperatures wont be too hot, and after visiting all three shops you can walk off the sweets at Hac Sa Beach or Cheoc Van Beach while waiting for sunset. Summer requires attention to mosquito prevention; areas near the coast in Coloane have more mosquitoes, so bringing your own repellent is recommended.

【Travel Tips】

1. None of these three shops accept reservations, nor do they support electronic payment; cash only. Its recommended to exchange sufficient Macau Pataca (MOP) on the Macau Peninsula before departure.

2. For souvenirs, Lord Stow's egg tarts and baked cakes all have exquisite packaging, suitable for bringing to family and friends. Golden Swallow's dang kuih has a short shelf life (two days at room temperature), so its recommended to eat immediately; not ideal for bringing home. French Daughter Bakery's cheese shrimp meat pies can be refrigerated for three days, suitable as souvenirs to bring back.

3. If you plan to enjoy desserts slowly back at your hotel, remember Coloane's climate is humid, especially in summer; pastries easily become soft and moist. Its recommended to seal in bags and place in the hotel refrigerator.

4. Around Chinese New Year (usually January-February), these shops release Lunar New Year pastries such as year cake and turnip cake, with different preparation methods and richer flavors than usual. However, lines are especially long during this period; arriving early is recommended for those wanting to try the novelty.

5. Finally, a small suggestion for those who genuinely want deep understanding: If time and energy permit, after visiting the dessert shops, consider visiting the nearby Coloane Library. This ancient building built in 1911 has now transformed into a quiet, comfortable reading space. After indulging in desserts, flipping through an old book about Macau food culture here will reveal that the history behind these sweets is even more memorable than the sweets themselves.
