The Alishan National Scenic Area is located in Alishan Township, Chiayi County, at elevations between 800 and 2,600 meters. It is one of Taiwan's most iconic highland scenic areas. The trail network here complements the Alishan Forest Railway, creating a unique "railway + trail" hiking experience that differs fundamentally from ordinary forest trails. Unlike pure summit climbs, Alishan's trails offer a stronger sense of "time"—you can choose to take the small train deep into the forest, then explore the ancient tree groves and scenic viewpoints with trails, experiencing the forestry history of this area that was once one of Taiwan's three major timber production regions.
The greatest feature of Alishan's trails lies in its "railway culture." The Alishan Forest Railway was constructed during the Japanese colonial period to transport precious timber such as red cypress and hinoki, and remains a world-renowned high-altitude railway to this day. Visitors can take the small train to various trailheads, then use trails to connect attractions—this "railway shuttle" approach is a unique Alishan experience. Additionally, Alishan is also the traditional territory of the Tsou people. Tribal elements and cultural imagery can be seen along the routes, enriching the cultural depth of the mountain journey.
【Recommended Trails】
1. Zhushan Sunrise Trail: Hiking from Zhushan Station to the Zhushan Sunrise Observatory, approximately 1.4 km, taking about 30 minutes. This is Taiwan's most iconic sunrise hiking trail. Japanese fir trees are planted along the path, offering peach blossoms in spring, rolling sea of clouds in summer, and opportunities to see snow in winter. The trail is gentle and suitable for all ages. Taking the small train to Zhushan Station in the early morning, then hiking here to wait for sunrise, is the most classic Alishan itinerary. Morning temperatures are around 10 to 15°C; bringing a warm jacket is recommended.
2. Matsuya Line Trail: Take the small train from Alishan Station to Matsuya Station, then begin walking. Total distance is approximately 9.2 km, requiring 4 to 5 hours. This trail preserves numerous abandoned forestry bridges and tunnels, exuding a strong sense of historical沧桑 (vicissitudes), earning it the reputation of "forestry railway ruins aesthetics." Some sections are relatively primitive, requiring caution for slippery conditions. Along the route, you can see pristine cypress forests and clear streams. The endpoint Shimengyuan offers excellent views, with distant views of Tashan Mountain and Duigaoyue. Moderate physical fitness required; suitable for hikers with some experience.
3. Giant Tree Trail: Starting from Xianglin Giant Tree Station within the Alishan Forest Recreation Area, approximately 2 km, forming a circular loop taking about 1 hour. This is the essence area of Alishan's ancient tree groves. Dozens of thousand-year-old red cypress and hinoki trees line the trail, creating an awe-inspiring sight. The "Divine Tree" itself is over 3,000 years old and is Alishan's treasured landmark. The trail is well-paved with mostly stairs and wooden boardwalks, relatively gentle, but attracts large crowds. Visiting early morning or evening is recommended to avoid the peak客流 (foot traffic). Admission is included in the Alishan Forest Recreation Area ticket.
4. Duigaoyue Trail: Starting from Duigaoyue Station to the Duigaoyue Observation Deck, approximately 1.6 km, taking about 50 minutes. This is an excellent spot for autumn foliage viewing at Alishan. From November to December each year, crimson maple leaves contrast beautifully with golden bald cypress trees, attracting numerous photography enthusiasts. The observation deck overlooks the Alishan settlement and layers of mountain ranges. On clear days, you can even see the Yu Shan mountain range peaks in the distance. The trail has some起伏 (elevation changes), requiring moderate体力 (physical effort), but overall difficulty is moderate.
5. Shuishan Giant Tree Trail: Starting from Shuishan Station to the Shuishan Giant Tree, approximately 2.5 km, taking about 1.5 hours. This is a recently opened trail with pristine scenery and few visitors, suitable for backpackers seeking tranquility. The Shuishan Giant Tree is estimated to be around 1,500 years old, with well-developed aerial roots and elegant form. The rich forest scenery and continuous bird songs along the route make this a trail with a stronger sense of "secret spot" at Alishan. Self-prepared food and water are required; there are no supply points along the trail.
