Alishan is not only Taiwan's most famous mountain scenic area, but also an excellent destination for visitors seeking unique souvenirs. With an altitude exceeding 2,000 meters and significant temperature swings between day and night, the region produces high-quality high-mountain tea and Alishan coffee, complemented by the cultural crafts of the Tsou indigenous people, creating a unique shopping experience. While there are no large department stores, the souvenir shops and specialty stores distributed around the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area and along the surrounding roads will allow you to return with plenty of treasures.
When shopping in Alishan, the biggest feature is "direct source purchasing" — whether it's high-mountain tea, coffee, or handmade mochi, you can buy fresh, first-hand products directly at the source. In recent years, as independent travelers have increased, these merchants have also placed greater emphasis on packaging quality and product diversity. Items such as cherry blossom season limited flavors and cultural creative products combining indigenous patterns have made souvenir options even more abundant.
Alishan Tongyi Specialty Store
Located directly opposite the Alishan Visitor Center, this store enjoys an excellent location and serves as the first stop for most visitors either before or after their mountain hike. The store offers a comprehensive range of products, covering Alishan high-mountain tea, oolong tea bags, Alishan coffee beans, and indigenous handmade crafts. In terms of pricing, Alishan high-mountain tea ranges from several hundred to over a thousand NT dollars depending on grade, while coffee beans are approximately 250 to 500 NT dollars. Since the store sources directly from the production area, quality is guaranteed to a certain extent. The staff are familiar with tea varieties and brewing methods, and can provide professional purchase advice, making it an ideal choice for first-time visitors to Alishan.
Wankexiang Souvenir Shop
Located near the Tchetch-Ang-Ang-Ang (Heavenly Long Earthly Eternal) Bridge, Wankexiang is a favorite Alishan souvenir shop among many food enthusiasts. Their signature products include nougat cookies and coconut balls, with a sweet but not cloying taste that is particularly popular among young people. A box of nougat cookies is approximately 200 to 300 NT dollars, while coconut balls start from 150 NT dollars depending on packaging size. The greatest advantage here is the relatively long shelf life of products, making them suitable for giving as gifts to friends and family. The store also offers tasting services, so visitors can try before buying to ensure the products match their taste preferences.
Longmei Meat Buns
This shop, now run by the third generation, is a well-known traditional old shop in the Alishan area. Their signature products include steamed buns and meat buns of various flavors, with generous fillings and affordable prices. Meat buns are approximately 25 to 35 NT dollars each. Due to high demand, they typically sell out quickly as soon as they come out of the steamer. It is recommended to purchase in the morning to avoid disappointment. Many locals say that the key to Longmei Meat Buns' enduring popularity lies in their solid handmade craftsmanship and quality ingredients. Paired with Alishan high-mountain tea, it makes for a perfect mountain afternoon tea.
Sunrise Shop
If you're looking for products with commemorative value, Sunrise Shop is another good choice. They specialize in limited-edition cherry blossom season items such as "Cherry Blossom Sunrise Cookies" and other commemorative cookies. The packaging design also incorporates the classic imagery of Alishan sunrise, making them perfect souvenirs for friends. Prices range approximately from 150 to 350 NT dollars, depending on the type of product. The store also sells Alishan scenery postcards and hand-drawn maps, making it a must-visit for souvenir collectors.
Ajiang's Home Café
While not a traditional souvenir shop, this is definitely worth a visit for visitors who love Alishan coffee. The store offers freshly brewed Alishan high-mountain coffee, priced at approximately 120 to 180 NT dollars per cup. Visitors can also participate in coffee DIY experience activities (approximately 300 to 500 NT dollars). Please note that the store has a minimum spending requirement, accepts cash only, and has a 1.5-hour time limit for stays. It is recommended to plan your itinerary in advance.

The小火車 (small train) operating hours in winter (October to March) are 08:00 to 17:00, while in summer (April to September) they extend until 18:00. Travel Tips
For shopping in Alishan, it is recommended to schedule your shopping time on the second day of your trip in the early morning or when descending from the mountain. This is because most souvenir shops have the most complete inventory in the morning, especially for popular items like Longmei Meat Buns that require queuing. Purchasing early in the morning offers the best guarantee. During the cherry blossom season (typically March to April), the area will be particularly crowded, so it is advisable to avoid the weekend peak crowds. When purchasing tea, it is worth comparing several shops, as the same Alishan high-mountain tea may have significant price differences between different stores. Finally, remember to carry some cash with you, as some stores like Ajiang's Home Café only accept cash, and mobile payment is not available everywhere in this area.
