But don't turn around and leave just yet! Sun Moon Lake's nighttime charm is absolutely on par with any lantern festival. The sparkling reflections on the lake surface, the warm lighting along the lakeside walkway, and the misty beauty of distant mountain silhouettes against the night sky create an atmosphere even more romantic than traditional lantern festivals. Combined with the nearby Nantou County Lantern Festival (held annually from February to March at the Nantou County Exhibition Center), this nighttime journey becomes even more enriching.

The nighttime lighting system at Sun Moon Lake has been carefully designed, with soft LED decorations lighting up the lakeside walkways, docks, and major attractions. Renamed an architectural wonder by CNN, the Xiangshan Visitor Center becomes even more captivating at night. Arriving around dusk is recommended; you can capture the transition from sunset to night, watching the lake transform from golden glitter to twinkling lights. Shuishe Dock Light Walkway
The lakeside walkway, approximately 500 meters long, is illuminated with warm yellow light at night. The cherry blossom trees (in spring) and maple trees (in autumn) lining the walkway look especially beautiful under the lights. The yachts and bamboo rafts at the dock also light up decorative lights, creating beautiful reflections on the lake surface. Located halfway up the mountain, Wenwu Temple is brightly lit at night, with its magnificent architecture appearing even more solemn in the darkness. Cien Temple Night Hiking Trail
The 400-step trail has safe lighting at night, and while climbing requires some effort, the 360-degree lake view from the top is absolutely worth it. At night, Cien Temple itself resembles a lighthouse, adding a mysterious aura to the lake area. Bringing a flashlight for auxiliary lighting is recommended, as the trail is steep—please exercise caution. From the tower top, you can see the entire nighttime light layout of Sun Moon Lake.
Nantou County Lantern Festival Venue (Seasonal)
The Nantou City Exhibition Center, about a 30-minute drive from Sun Moon Lake, hosts the Nantou Lantern Festival annually from February to March. The 2026 Lantern Festival features the theme "Mountain Forest Tea Fragrance," combining AI interactive technology with traditional lantern art. The main lantern, "Tea Phoenix," stands 15 meters tall, accompanied by laser light shows and music, performing nightly at 8 PM precisely. The venue includes a food zone where you can sample Nantou's local specialty snacks.

Transportation
From Taichung High-Speed Rail Station, take the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Sun Moon Lake line. A one-way ticket costs NT$166, with a journey time of approximately 90 minutes. The last return bus departs at 18:25 from Shuishe—please arrive 30 minutes beforehand. Self-driving visitors can park at the Shuishe or Itashao parking lots, with overnight parking fees at NT$30 per hour. To reach the Nantou Lantern Festival, take a taxi with a journey time of approximately 30 minutes and fares around NT$400-500.

The lakeside bus does not operate at night. Electric bicycle rental for nighttime exploration is recommended at NT$200 per day, with returns required during business hours. Special charter boat services are available at night for lake tours, with a 3-hour nighttime itinerary starting at approximately NT$2000 (advance reservation required). Entry to the Nantou Lantern Festival is free, with parking fees at NT$50 per session.

The optimal time for nighttime observation is between 6-9 PM, when the lake lighting effects are most prominent.
