Macao's Last Ecological Oasis
Amid the casinos of Macao, Coloane feels like a forgotten secret garden. This southernmost island of Macao still maintains 70% green coverage, the only place in the Macao Special Administrative Region where you can still hear birdsong and see fishing boats. As a licensed guide who has taken thousands of visitors, the thing I say most is: "Want to see the real Macao life? You have to visit Coloane."
Here there's no commercial bustle of Taipa, nor the dense historical sites of the Macao Peninsula, yet you won't find elsewhere in Macao—the original coastline, traditional fishing village life, and a slow pace that makes you forget time.
Unique Eco Slow Living Experience
Coloane's charm lies in its contrasts. When you cross the COTAI Strip from the casino world and suddenly enter a completely different time and space: there's the smell of sea salt in the air, century-old trees lining the streets, and the distant sound of ferry horns as fishing boats return to port. This is the only area in Macao that maintains a complete ecosystem, and the best choice for experiencing "Slow Living Macao."
More importantly, life here still follows the tides and seasons, not the casino clock.
Five Top Eco Slow Living Spots
Hac Sa Beach
Macao's only natural black sand beach, with the black sand coming from mineral deposits washed ashore by the ocean. Come here at 6am and you'll see locals jogging and practicing Tai Chi, with no tourist crowds. The beach is about 1.5km long, and at low tide there's more space suitable for shell collecting. There's a BBQ area on weekends, but weekdays feel almost like a private beach.
The coastal trail leads to Cheoc Van Beach, about 20 minutes one way, passing by several small fishing ports where you can see the real life of Macao fishermen.
Coloane Town Square & St. Francis Xavier Church
This small church, built in 1928, is the heart of Coloane. The small square in front of the church is especially enchanting in the afternoon—elderly people playing chess under the trees, children kicking a ball, and traditional two-story Portuguese architecture in the distance.
There are a few local tea restaurants beside the church. We recommend the pork chop bun at "San Hou Lei Coffee & Food"—it's more substantial than the tourist versions on the Peninsula. The pork here is freshly pan-fried, the bread is baked the same day, MOP$25 each, cheaper and tastier than downtown.
Lord Stow's Bakery
The birthplace of the global Portuguese egg tart, but the real experience isn't just buying a tart to go. We recommend sitting inside for coffee and watching the master make the tarts. The fresh baking time is 2-4pm daily—straight out of the oven, the tarts have crispy pastry and warm filling, nothing like the frozen versions.
One egg tart for MOP$10, with Portuguese coffee for MOP$18—sit for an afternoon watching the slow pace of Coloane town, much more meaningful than killing time in a casino.
Cheoc Van Beach
A more private option than Hac Sa Beach, with golden sand and crystal-clear water. This is the secret vacation spot for local Macao people, with almost no tourists on weekdays. The beach has lifeguards and basic facilities, but maintains its natural state without overdevelopment.
Cheoc Van Hotel is right next to the beach—even if you're not staying, you can dine at the hotel restaurant while enjoying the sea view. Lunch sets cost about MOP$180-250, better quality than equivalent restaurants downtown, with a better environment.
Coloane Trail
From Coloane town to Hac Sa Beach, there's a coastal walking trail about 4km long. This is one of the few real "hiking" routes in Macao, passing by small fishing ports, natural rocky coastline, and traditional villages.
We recommend starting at 8am to avoid the midday heat. The entire walk takes about 1.5 hours, with pavilions along the way for rest. Bring enough water as there are few shops along the route.

Travel Tips
Best Time: Avoid weekend afternoons. Weekday mornings after 9am to before 4pm is the best time to avoid morning/evening commuters and weekend crowds.
Weather Tips: Sunscreen is essential in summer—UV at the beach is stronger than downtown. Winter winds are stronger, recommend bringing a light jacket.
Cultural Tips: Most Coloane residents are indigenous or old-time Macao people who speak quietly—respect the local pace of life. Don't speak loudly inside the church.
Safety Tips: Swimming at the beach please note the tide times. Lifeguards at Hac Sa Beach are on duty from 10:00-18:00. Some sections of the walking trail are steep—wear comfortable shoes.
In Coloane, time naturally slows down. What it teaches you here is not just another side of Macao, but something increasingly precious in modern life—the ability to slow down.
