If you're planning to enter Osaka from Kansai Airport, or want to explore all the Kansai core cities like Osaka, Kobe, and Nara in one go, the JR Pass is definitely the most worthwhile ticket to invest in.
Many people think JR Pass is only for "JR lines," but it actually covers the Kansai Airport Express Haruka, the Sanyo Shinkansen (Osaka to Shin-Osaka section), and key lines like the JR Loop Line. When used properly, a single ride from Kansai Airport to central Osaka can save you nearly half the fare.
Haruka: The Best Choice for Getting to the City from Kansai Airport
The fastest way to get from Kansai Airport to Osaka is the JR Haruka. This express train directly connects Kansai Airport to major hubs like Tennoji and Shin-Osaka. The unreserved seat costs around ¥2,650, but with a JR Pass, you can ride the Haruka unlimited times. If you stay near Tennoji, a round trip alone makes the pass worth it.
We recommend taking the Haruka directly from the airport to Tennoji (about 35 minutes), then transferring to the JR Loop Line to Osaka Station or Namba. This is twice as fast as regular trains and more flexible than the Limousine Bus.
JR Loop Line: Exploring Osaka City
The JR Loop Line is one of the most useful transportation options in Osaka, connecting Osaka, Namba, Tennoji, Universal Studios Japan, and other hot spots. With a JR Pass, you can ride this line unlimited times, essentially saving you all JR fares within Osaka.
We strongly recommend planning a "reverse" itinerary using the Loop Line—for example, take the train to Universal Studios Japan in the morning, stop at Osaka Station to go shopping in the afternoon, then head to Tennoji for dinner. One line takes you all the way through, no extra tickets needed.
Kobe Day Trip: Fast and Cost-Effective
From Osaka to Kobe, taking the JR Tokaido Sanyo Line rapid train takes about 30 minutes, costing ¥850 one way. With a JR Pass, this cost is completely waived. Sannomiya Station is the main hub, with the bustling Motomachi Shopping Street and Nankinmachi Chinese Food Street nearby.
Kobe's highlight is the "city between mountains and sea"—while Arima Onsen is accessible on foot from Sannomiya Station (though it requires a transfer), the city center itself is perfect for a leisurely walk. Walking north from Sannomiya Station takes you to Kitano Ijinkan Street, which preserves many Western-style old buildings with an atmosphere similar to Taipei's Minsheng community but with more historic charm. Even with limited time, a half-day trip is enough to experience Kobe's port city atmosphere.
Nara Park: Highly Recommended for Same-Day Return
From Osaka to Nara, taking the JR Yamato Line rapid train takes about 50 minutes, costing ¥820 one way. The JR Pass applies here as well. Nara's highlight isn't just the Great Buddha at Todai-ji Temple, but the unique experience of an entire city that coexists with deer.
We recommend departing from Osaka in the morning, heading to Nara Park to interact with the deer, then walking to Todai-ji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. In the afternoon, if time permits, you can visit nearby Tofuku-ji Temple or Nara-machi. Taking the JR back to Osaka in the evening arrives just in time for dinner.
Shin-Osaka: Convenience as a Transfer Hub
Shin-Osaka Station is a stop on the Tokaido Shinkansen, with direct access to Kyoto (about 15 minutes, ¥1,480 one way), Nagoya, and even Tokyo. While Kyoto is more commonly安排為一日遊,但如果你的行程包含京都,使用JR Pass的優勢就更明顯了。
