Important reminder: There is no JR rail service within Okinawa Prefecture. The main public transportation is the Okinawa Urban Monorail (Yui Rail)
Many travelers mistakenly believe they can use JR Pass in Okinawa, but in fact, Okinawa is the only prefecture in Japan without a JR rail system. This beautiful subtropical island has its own unique transportation network, centered around the Okinawa Urban Monorail (沖縄都市モノレール, affectionately known as Yui Rail), connecting important attractions from Naha Airport to Shuri Castle.
The Unique Charm of Okinawa Urban Monorail
Yui Rail opened in 2003 and is Japan's southernmost railway system, spanning 17 km with 19 stations. This elevated monorail is not only a practical mode of transportation but also the best platform for enjoying Okinawa's urban scenery. The train穿梭在亞熱帶景觀中,讓乘客能從空中視角俯瞰那霸市區、東海美景,甚至遠眺慶良間諸島的湛藍海域。
The monorail uses an unmanned driver system with frequent departures and extremely high punctuality, with trains every 4-5 minutes during morning rush hour, making it the most convenient choice connecting the airport and the city. The train cars incorporate Okinawa elements, with some colorful trains showcasing local cultural characteristics - riding itself is a cultural experience.
Curated Recommended Attractions Along the Line
Shuri Castle Park (Shuri Station)
The political and cultural center of the Ryukyu Kingdom, actively under reconstruction since the 2019 fire. While the main hall is temporarily closed for viewing, the castle ruins, Shureimon Gate, and other important cultural assets remain intact, showcasing 500 years of the Ryukyu Kingdom's glorious history. About a 15-minute walk from Shuri Station, passing through Kinjo Town's stone-paved path, the ancient stone steps are listed among Japan's 100 best hiking trails.
Kokusai Dori Shopping District (Makishi Station, Kenchomae Station)
About 1.6 km long, Kokusai Dori is Okinawa's busiest commercial street, dubbed the "Mile of Miracle," rebuilt from ruins after the war into what it is today. The streets are lined with souvenir shops, izakaya, and live houses where you can taste authentic Okinawa cuisine such as Okinawa soba with cartilage (average ¥650), sea grapes, and purple sweet potato tarts. At night, renowned restaurants like SAM'S teppanyaki are filled to capacity, showcasing Okinawa's vibrant nightlife.
Naminoue Shrine (Kenchomae Station)
The chief guardian shrine of Okinawa, built on a sea cliff of raised coral reefs, it is the first of the Eight Shrines of Ryukyu. Below the shrine is Naminoue Beach, the only natural beach in Naha City. The special location allows visitors to experience both religious culture and ocean scenery simultaneously, making it a popular spot for photographers during sunset.
Ocean Expo Park (Tropical Beach Station)
One of Japan's largest subtropical theme parks, covering approximately 71 hectares. The park features the famous Ocean Expo Museum, Coconut Palm Grove, and the stunning Tropical Dream Center. In 2005, it was certified as a "Certified Scenic Spot" by the Japanese government, making it a must-visit attraction in Okinawa.
