When it comes to cycling travel in Osaka, many people's first reaction is, "Are there bike paths here?" The truth is, Osaka's cycling culture isn't as prevalent as Tokyo's, but this is precisely its advantage—there are fewer crowded shared bike paths and more open spaces to explore freely. As a planner who takes over 200 guests on deep Osaka tours each year, I've found that travelers who cycle in Osaka are more likely to experience that "local feeling."

When it comes to cycling in Osaka, many people's first reaction is "Are there bike lanes here?" The truth is, cycling culture in Osaka is indeed not as prevalent as in Tokyo, but this is precisely its advantage—fewer crowded shared bike lanes mean more open spaces to explore freely. As a planner who takes over 200 guests to experience Osaka in depth every year, I've found that travelers who cycle in Osaka tend to more easily discover that "local feeling."

Why choose Osaka for cycling? The city's terrain is exceptionally flat, with the entire city at an elevation of rarely more than 20 meters—no like Tokyo's painful constant uphill climbs. Low physical demands make it suitable for travelers of all ages. Moreover, Osaka is surrounded by multiple rivers—the Yodo River, Yamato River, and Momma River—forming a natural cycling route network. The city skyline seen when crossing riverbanks on a bike often brings more pleasant surprises than visiting designated attractions.

Recommended Routes

1. 【Moma River Area · Sakura Riverside Bike Path】

If I could only recommend one cycling route in Osaka, it would be the Sakura Riverside along the Moma River. This bike path following Moma River extends from near Osaka Station to Osaka Castle direction, spanning approximately 4 km. The spring cherry blossom tunnel is a hidden cherry blossom spot known only to locals. The road conditions are excellent—fully asphalted with wide enough lanes for side-by-side riding. There aren't many tourists along the riverbank, allowing for a leisurely ride and photography. Most importantly, this area is only a 15-minute walk from JR Osaka Station—you can start directly from Osaka Station without needing additional transportation. The early morning rides between 6 AM and 8 AM are especially recommended, where you can see local office workers jogging along the riverbank and experience how a typical Osaka day begins. The other side of the Moma River area connects to the famous Sakuranomiya Park. From late March to early April during the blooming season, both sides of the riverbank transform into pink tunnels—a magnificent sight. Continuing eastward from here takes you to the foot of Osaka Castle's Tenshu Tower. The entire route takes approximately 1.5 hours including photo stops.

2. 【Port Area · Osaka South Harbor Smooth Bike Path】

To experience a completely different side of Osaka, the port area is a must-visit. Not only does it feature large bike paths, but more importantly, it fulfills the desire to see the sea, bridges, and ferris wheel all in one go. The Tempozan Ferris Wheel is right next to the bike path—the thrill of approaching on a bike is a hundred times stronger than taking the subway. The port bike path extends along the Osaka Bay coastline, approximately 3 km long, passing by Tempozan Shopping Center, Kaiyukan Aquarium, and toward Universal Studios Japan. The open views throughout and the sea breeze make for a very comfortable ride, especially suitable for evening visits when you can catch both sunset and night views. This is also one of the few areas in Osaka with official bike parking (paid parking is available at Kaiyukan and Tempozan Market), so parking won't be a worry. The entire port route can be planned for 2 to 3 hours, including time for photo stops and rest. Electric bike rental is recommended as there can be headwinds on some port area sections—regular bikes may be more tiring. Electric bike rental costs approximately 500 to 800 yen per hour, with slight variations at different rental locations.

3. 【Nakanoshima · Art and Water Leisure Bike Path】

Nakanoshima is the essence of Osaka—a narrow island between the Dōga River and Tosabori River—home to important buildings such as the National Museum of Art and the Central Public Hall. Cycling through itself is an art tour. Nakanoshima's bike path is very smooth, with a circular route of approximately 2 km, and there are cafes along the way for breaks. Arriving around 3 to 4 PM is especially recommended—the sun's angle at that time reflects off the water onto the buildings, producing photos with excellent texture. Cars are prohibited here, making it very safe—families with children can ride with peace of mind. From Nakanoshima northward, you can connect to the commercial district toward Tenjinbashi-suji, while southward leads toward Namba. The route is very flexible and can be adjusted anytime based on physical stamina. Bike rental stations near Nakanoshima can be hard to find, so it's recommended to rent in advance at nearby stations (such as Kitahama Station or Watanabe-bashi Station) before setting out.

4. 【Yamato River · Rural Riverside Cycling】

This is the most underrated route. The Yamato River flows through eastern Osaka—after leaving central Osaka, it's an entirely different world. The riverbank features undeveloped natural scenery, and you can sometimes spot herons foraging in shallow waters. Cycling upstream along the Yamato River from near the Hannan Station takes approximately 1 hour to reach the border with Wakayama Prefecture on the opposite bank. Road conditions are stable but some sections are unpaved—off-road tires are recommended. This route is perfect for travelers wanting to escape crowds and find the "real Japanese countryside." There aren't many commercial facilities along the way, so bringing simple snacks and water is advised. The round trip including rest time should be planned for half a day (approximately 3 to 4 hours). Although relatively less known, that's precisely what creates those delightful surprises when locals say in amazement, "How did you find this place?"

5. 【Osaka Castle Perimeter · Historical Ride Under the Castle Walls】

The final route is a classic among classics—the outer moat bike path circling Osaka Castle. Approximately 2 km long, it surrounds the historic castle built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. While there are more tourists, the willow shade and stone walls along the moat have a unique charm—both spring's fresh greenery and autumn's fall foliage are worth seeing. Visiting early morning or evening is recommended to avoid crowds. Elevation changes are minimal, making pushing the bike effortless. If energy permits, you can ride deep into Osaka Castle Park and take photos at the plaza in front of Tenshu Tower.

Practical Information

【Transportation】

Bike rental in Osaka is primarily available through: (1) Bike rental shops near major stations—chain rental locations exist around JR Osaka Station, Namba Station, and Umeda Station; (2) Some taxi companies also offer bike rental services; (3) Tourist spots such as Tempozan and Kaiyukan have rental counters. Passport registration is required for electric bike rental, typically requiring a credit card deposit or 5,000 yen security deposit. Some shops cannot accept reservations without a Japanese phone number—direct walk-in is recommended (if in stock, rental is usually possible).

【Costs】

Regular bike rental costs approximately 300 to 500 yen per hour; electric bikes are 500 to 800 yen per hour. Full-day rental (8 hours) costs approximately 2,000 to 2,500 yen for regular bikes and 3,500 to 4,500 yen for electric bikes. Student ID cards receive discounts at some stores—remember to bring yours. Some parking lots offer overnight bike storage for approximately 500 to 1,000 yen.

【Rental Shop Hours】

Most rental shops are open from 9 AM to 7 PM, with regular hours on weekends and national holidays. Some tourist spot rental locations extend service hours during peak season. Advance phone confirmation is recommended.

Travel Tips

✓ Osaka's bike paths don't have as complete a navigation system as Tokyo. Downloading apps designed for cycling in Osaka like "Go! My Bicycle Osaka" or directly searching for riverside place names (such as "Moma River" or "Yamato River") on Google Maps will be more accurate.

✓ Osaka's river bike paths may have temporary closures during typhoon season (July to October). Checking the day's weather and river level forecast before heading out is recommended.

✓ Remember to ride on the left—Japan's traffic rules are the same as mainland China (opposite to China).

✓ There are more mosquitoes along the riverbank in summer evenings—bringing mosquito repellent is advised. Cycling in winter (November to February) requires warm gloves and scarves—water temperature is approximately 5 degrees lower than actual air temperature.
